DEGENERATE STAR is a sci-fi horror visual novel where you explore a warped spaceship with your crew. It has a branching narrative with four main routes and seven different endings. I've been working on it almost entirely solo for the past year (apart from the gorgeous portrait art by Charlotte Clement!) and am super excited to finally be releasing it.

Check it out if you like classic sci-fi horror (think Alien) with a liminal twist!

Ah, I got it working, thanks again! I'm not used to this kind of thing, thanks for providing such an indepth tool.

Thanks so much! I've just tried this and am getting the error:

AttributeError: 'NoneType' object has no attribute 'get_cursor_coords'

I called the function with:

vc = VirtualCursor()
renpy.show_screen("locked_tooltip", data.title, vc.get_vc_position(id), data.unlocked)

Sorry if i'm missing something super obvious!

This rocks, thanks so much for making it! One question (if you don't mind answering), how could I make this non-case sensitive? It would help a lot in making it more flexible. No worries if not, thank you again for making this in the first place.

Hey! Sorry for the stupid question, but I'm trying to display a tooltip at the position of the virtual cursor but I can't figure out how to access its position.

8.3.7 works great, thanks!

Hey! I'm unsure whether you ever got around to testing for 8.3 compatibility, but I've given this a test with a project on 8.3.6 and am unable to get it working. I've tried both the ripple test and using it in my own functions, and neither displays any results. It isn't throwing any errors, just not having any visible effect.

You have been assigned to investigate the S.S Vandermeer - a small research vessel drifting out into space, no longer responding to hails. VLSA didn't give you a choice, and it seems like no one else on this mission got one either. Who you work with and what you discover will not only shape the fate of the Vandermeer's crew, but also your own.

The demo comprises about 15 minutes of content, introducing the characters and the world. Play it here: /__site/ozoneinteractive.itch.io/degenerate-star-demo

Hey! Yes, on the condition that the translation states that it is unofficial, remains free, and links back to this page and my official developer website. If you have any questions about the content, reach out to me through email or dms!

thank you so much!! this is a really thoughtful review.

if it makes you feel any better, the full game should be out before september!

8.3.2!

Finally got around to giving this a go, and am getting the error:

AttributeError: module 'renpy.exports' has no attribute 'get_statement_name'

If it's not fixable, I can just change the way I write text for those sections. Thanks for trying to help!

Thanks so much!! Would there be a way to make this only work on ADV dialogue? I'm using Nighten's phone script for NVL and the pausing makes the animations replay after the pause.

This is really helpful, thanks! Would there be a way to make this script pause character callback sounds during these automatic pauses? I'm using this tutorial here and would love to make the speech sound more organic by mixing in with this plugin. Thanks either way, I really appreciate your work!

this is fantastic! have you ever spoken about your process for the background illustrations? they're gorgeous

thanks so much!!

thank you! i hope you enjoy my next one as well

NEVER

thank you!! it’s honestly already gotten much more attention than i expected

yep, thanks for playing!!

really enjoyed this!! makes me want to try using my bryce renders in a game. you lean into the aesthetic really well, it's a lot of fun to explore

i really, really enjoyed this!! by any chance, did you find out about that lindt website through folding ideas video on the metaverse? i was happy i realized that site was inspiration. super impressive project, especially for a jam. looking forward to seeing what else you make!!

super excited to see how this progresses, i love your work!!

Thanks!!

thanks !!

Thanks! Yeah, I definitely want to give the music another pass, it got done right at the end of the jam so I should probably move a few things around. I’m glad the web build worked, and I’ll keep that in mind!!

i really liked the use of bryce for this entry! definitely lends itself to the nightmare feel of the game. i would recognise those modus interactive renders anywhere as well, and they're used very effectively. unfortunately, i had a bug when i entered the obelisk! when i tried to fashion a stick to attack the nodule my game crashed.

overall though, i was really invested in where the story was going and the use of bryce was unique. i'd be interested to see it expanded upon outside of the jam!!

Beautiful, weird, and just very impressive. Made me mad that I've missed all your other games until now!! My favorite art of any game I've tried in this jam.

Congrats!! You deserve it :)

Hm, that’s really strange! From what I can see, it isn’t a build problem but just a permission mix-up that can happen. It might be the location you have it installed. Have you tried running it as an administrator? Sorry I can’t be more help, it seems like it can be a range of things!!

thanks!! patricia taxxon’s music definitely carries it in that department.

fun and frantic arcade experience, with an inventive use of the theme. scales up in difficulty a little quickly, but for 48 hours its a really nice submission

really enjoyed it!! pitch perfect atmosphere with the mix of music and handdrawn art, with a unique mechanic of moving houses around (we did a similar thing with rooms, lol). had a few small bugs but overall really nicely produced with a melancholic vibe

clean, cartoony artstyle and nice environments to explore! the growing/shrinking mechanic lends itself to some fun exploration and puzzle solving. i had some small issues with items clipping through doors, but considering the length of the jam that is to be expected (hey, our game has it too). i love escape room style things like this, and this one is worth a try!

a fun take on the jam theme! taking down other ships to salvage their parts is a nice choice and it could easily be expanded into a bigger game. the camera controls are unfortunately a little bit nauseating, but overall the aesthetics make a nice clean look out of simple shapes. nice QoL with the keybind menu as well!

really nice handdrawn artstyle, with some transparency and aliasing issues that could easily be cleaned up postjam.  unfortunately i experienced some issues where the rocks i knocked would block off paths i needed to access. the concept of having to navigate in two different forms with different vulnerabilities is fun, and could definitely be expanded into some fun puzzles (and creepy atmosphere, which the music does a really good job at adding now).

love the neo-noir look, especially in the menus! everyone here is mentioning portal, which im sure is an inspiration, but it also really reminded me of superliminal. the voice acting and music add a nice atmosphere to the experience. unfortunately, i experienced a lot of bugs with the camera but that is very fair for a jam project. would be fun to see it expanded and polished up!

super cute!! i love the little lizard guy and i am deeply sorry for cutting off his tail. on a more serious note, the art style is really clean and stylish, and it really brings me back to playing random dressup games as a kid. not exactly a deep or mechanically complex experience, but it is light and cute and worth a go

the constantly changing map turns the long-term planning of a tower defense game into a much more frantic experience where you constantly have to reevaluate the placement of your towers, making it a pretty fun use of the theme. unfortunately, the towers are very expensive to both place and move, making mistakes pretty punishing. the lizard vs bird concept is cute and i liked the art and overall aesthetic!

super fun theme, i adore the knight's pointed helmet. very simplistic gameplay wise, but the concept of slowly lifting a huge sword is inherently charming and fun, and it doesnt overstay its welcome due to the genuinely delightful enemy designs.
