The Autumn Katana
Today’s pixel art is inspired by the video game Ninja Gaiden II for the NES—an 8-bit ninja adventure, likely from the 1980s or very early 1990s. In essence, it draws from those VHS-era ninja films, where ninjas—dressed in a kaleidoscope of colors, much like the Power Rangers—leap about. Here, a ninja with a katana is in the thick of a serious, grand adventure.
This is my illustration based on Ninja Gaiden II (NES). It’s a cold autumn day; it rained yesterday. The ninja sprints along a stone path, vaulting over enemies—there are so many of them that only his speed, combined with the swing of his katana, can save him. Magical power even allows him to take flight for a brief moment.
But some of his foes possess magic of their own. They guard the Sword of Autumn—the Autumn Katana—and it won’t be easily won. You’ve become hopelessly lost in this labyrinth; some sort of sorcery is at play, rendering your original map useless.
A teleportal opens in October, remaining accessible for just 30 days. Those who dare may attempt to claim the Autumn Katana. This enchanted realm, existing outside of space and time, is protected by guardians—many have tried, yet none have succeeded.
Fortunately, it’s only an 8-bit game cartridge. If you lose, you’ll simply see a "Game Over" screen—you can always try again tomorrow.
